GIRLS Inspire is a Commonwealth of Learning (COL) project to provide schooling and skills development to some of the world’s most vulnerable and hard-to reach girls. Community organisations in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Mozambique and Tanzania are mobilised to leverage the power of open and distance learning (ODL) to end the cycle of child, early and forced marriage (CEFM) and to address other barriers that prevent girls’ economic participation.
Bedari is one of the implementing partners in Pakistan. It is implementing this project in Muzaffargarh, and would include district Bahawalpur at a later stage. It is working only on one component – community mobilization and awareness raising among communities around girls education, and their economic empowerment. It is a 3 years long project starting in 2016, and ending in 2019.
Bedari is engaging communities (including men and boys) through various means like community sessions, and theater performances. These activities are focused on creating conducive atmosphere for girls’ education, discouraging child, early, and forced marriages, and supporting girls in their efforts to learn various employable skills. Furthermore, Bedari has started Self Growth Sessions for girls to help them understand their own strengths and weaknesses, learn communication, and leadership skills, and develop a life plan for themselves.
It would go a long way in improving girls’ situation, and would inspire more girls to be independent, confident, and able to live a life as per their own aspirations
