Women and Girls in COVID-19

Fatima

COVID-19 pandemic has introduced unforeseen challenges in which one big ethical question for mother was Should they breastfeed during the pandemic?

Fatima is a 23-year-old housewife. She is a mother of three kids who live in Jay Salik colony Islamabad. She was worried about breastfeeding.

Bedari team gave hygiene kits in Jay Salik colony; during this visit, Fatima asked about the situation and her concerns regarding breastfeeding?

Bedari team told her that breastmilk provides antibodies that give babies everywhere a healthy boost and protect them against many infections. Antibodies and bio-active factors in breastmilk may fight against COVID-19 infection if a baby is exposed.

If you are breastfeeding and have symptoms of or confirmed COVID-19, take steps to avoid spreading the virus to your baby:

1: Wash your hands before touching your baby

2: Wear a cloth face covering, if possible, while feeding at the breast

3: Wash your hands before touching pump or bottle parts and clean all parts after each use

Speaking about the hygiene kits, she said that “In the situation of the pandemic we have a shortage of money due to lack of work. Through this kit, I can protect myself and my family from COVID-19.

Stela

Stela is a 34-year-old mother of three kids lives in slums of Islamabad. “I tell my children to bath regularly and always wash their hands before eating,” she says as she glances at the hygiene kits with anticipation. Several families mentioned living in fear of what would happen should the virus come to the Jay Salik colony as most live in very close quarters.

Alizbath

One young mother, Alizbath has been unable to leave her house as she has 3 children under the age of ten. Her husband is a daily wager. Due to lockdown during COVID, the earing stopped. The family has a double war to fight, HUNGER and COVID. They were out of many necessary household and food items and thinking about hygiene was not necessary and were hence exteremly obliged to receive the hygiene kit to manage one front.
