Nasreen Mai belongs to basti Dodian Wala, District Multan. She is 32 and has primary education. She lost her left arm in an accident. She works on farms and also runs a grocery shop. She participated in awareness sessions on child marriage and domestic violence organized by Bedari. She has learnt about women rights and rights of persons with disabilities by her participation in these sessions. She also learnt about the issue of domestic abuse of women and girls. She obtained her disability specific CNIC recently. “I did not face any difficulty at any stage during the process of acquiring my special CNIC because Bedari provided me pick and drop service and thorough guidance about the process.” She says that special CNIC has provided her with an identity and a certain sense of powerfulness. She is aware that this card will get her free treatment, government stipend and other services on discounted rates.Nasreen is motivated to work for women who suffer violence. But she is of the opinion that women/girls would have to stand up for themselves first and claim their rights particularly their right to protection from violence. She feels that in most cases of violence, women prefer to stay silent which results in perpetuation of violence. “If women/girls don’t want to help themselves, no one else can do so.” Nasreen herself is an example of resilience who did not allow her disability to overpower her. She lives in an area devoid of basic facilities of health and education. But she never gave up and kept working hard against all the odds. She now is a financially independent woman. Most importantly, she is confident and motivated enough to work for helping out other women/girls like her.
